WILDLIFE

The valley and woods are teeming with wildlife which if you don't see you can often hear.

Wild Boar
Red Deer
Roe Deer - their eerie barking often heard
Porcupine
Squirrels
Hare
Bats of various sorts
Fox
Wolf - rare, but about once a year we hear a pack moving through the valley below. A fantastic and other-wordly sound. Recently my new trail camera captured a lone wolf only meters from our door!
Pine Marten
Badger

Golden oriole
Buzzard
Nightingale
Various woodpeckers
Hoopoe
Bee-eater
Nightjar- the sound of hot Summer nights
Various owls
Cuckoo
Turtle Dove
Kestrel

But best of all are probably the fireflies. A magical and beautiful experience. If you have never seen a Summer night flashing with fireflies you really should! Come in late May and June for the best experience. Take a look HERE to get an idea of what it is like.

And some you might not want to meet:

Scorpion- common - best not to leave your clothes on the floor overnight! Sting not serious.
Snakes are present though not often seen and are always more frightened of us than we are of them, however enthusiasts can go and search for the following which have been seen over the years... Smooth snake, Whip snake, Viper, Aesculapian snake.
