25 European retreats: from Mallorcan fincas to secluded Greek island villas20/8/2021"  It's all birdsong, butterflies and wildflowers at this unfussy Umbrian homestay. It’s self-contained beside the house where owners Alan and Lucia live and is perfect for birdwatchers and mountaineers seeking a place off the beaten track. The shaded terrace, full of roses and geraniums, is made for alfresco meals while the elevated plunge pool looks out into the wilderness. The house is miles from town, on the edge of the Subasio National Park"

WILD UMBRIA

Wild Umbria is located on what was a small farm nestled in the woods of an unspoiled valley in the foothills of the Central Appenine mountains. Access is down a steep rough gravel road passable only with care. Our land covers 3.5 hectares of scrub, olives and woodland in a strip running from the top of our hill down to the stream in the valley bottom where packs of wolves roam in the wintertime.

Once upon a time not so long ago the people here lived a hard life of subsistence farming without running water or electricity but full of family and companionship. Those days passed and the land was abandoned for the comforts of the city. So it was that over 30 years ago we stumbled upon this place. We were young and perhaps overly idealistic, looking for a simpler way of living. So began a long and at times difficult process of restoring the old stone house and its land to some semblance of its former self. And here we are now, children having flown the nest, relationships ending and others beginning, and finally at the point where we can share this wonderful place with others. Doing so brings us great satisfaction. Don't come to us if you want manicured lawns and illuminated pathways, or if you are afraid of the occasional ant or spider or scorpion. But do come to us if you are looking for a retreat far away from the noise and pollution and confusion of modern life; If you appreciate silence and simple things but with just a little touch of luxury; If you want to wake up in the morning to just the sound of the birds; If you like to sit out under starry skies and wonder at the flashing of fireflies and the churring of the nightjar, or if you just want to relax with a good book at your private and secluded plunge pool.

If this describes you, this is the perfect place for your relaxing Summer holiday.

We created Casa Angiolina from a section of the rambling old stone farmhouse. Lucia and I  live at the other end of the building, available if you need us, but keeping out of your way if you don't.

Casa Angiolina is completely separate from our side of the building, inside and out. It has a private outdoor dining and relaxation area and its own beautifully located plunge pool.

TESTIMONIALS

"A lovely place with wonderful hosts. A home that makes you feel at home. A swimming pool that makes you dream of never returning home. This is the essence of hospitality. Everything is exactly as described, there are no false truths (as unfortunately often happens). The WiFi works, the pool is private, the silence is absolute. All immersed in the splendid Umbrian hills. Alan and Lucia are wonderful people who are pleasant to chat with. Lady Tess, the dog, is adorable. We will never stop thanking Alan and Lucia for sharing their paradise with us.

So glad we decided to book and find out for ourselves what Wild Umbria had to offer. We discovered it was even better than described on this site and we left feeling we have made new friends"

"When a holiday is so good you book to come back next year before you've left...."

"This place is so amazingly relaxing... The Wi-Fi is better than ours at home and the night sky has been so lovely to gaze on from the pool as we have taken our late night swims."
